Getting started

When should I get an accountant?

The sooner the better. Whether you have just set up your business or your filing deadline is getting close, we can help.

What happens on the free call?

We talk through your business, what you need and your deadlines, and check we are the right fit. You leave knowing what you need and what it will cost. There is no obligation.

Do I need to be near Devon?

No. We are based in East Devon but work with businesses right across the UK, online and by phone.

Pricing and payment

What will it cost?

You get a fixed price after your free call, before any work starts. Starting prices are on our pricing page.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. You can pay the full amount upfront, or split it into 12 equal monthly instalments. The choice is yours.

Are there any hidden costs?

No. Your price is agreed upfront. If your needs change, we talk to you before anything changes.

Working together

Will I have a point of contact?

Absolutely. Every client has their own dedicated accountant who they can contact whenever they need to.

How quickly will you reply?

Within one working day, and usually sooner.

Can we talk outside office hours?

Yes. Most business owners are busy during the day, so we offer evening calls by appointment.

Why not just use a cheaper bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper records your transactions. An accountant also prepares your accounts and tax returns and looks for every legitimate way to reduce your tax. Cutting corners on accounts often costs more in tax than it saves in fees.

Switching accountants

Is it easy to switch accountants?

Very easy. Just let your current accountant know you are moving, and we take it from there.

I am part-way through my financial year. Can I still switch?

Of course. We can prepare everything for your current year, and your previous year too if it still needs doing.

Tax returns and deadlines

When is the Self Assessment deadline?

For the tax year ending 5 April, an online return is due by the following 31 January. That is also the date any tax you owe has to be paid. Paper returns are due earlier, by 31 October.

What happens if I miss the tax return deadline?

HMRC charges a £100 penalty straight away, even if you owe no tax, and more the longer it stays late. Interest is added to any tax paid late. If you have missed it, get in touch and we will get it filed quickly.

What are payments on account?

If your Self Assessment bill is over £1,000, HMRC usually asks you to pay towards next year’s bill in advance. You pay two instalments, on 31 January and 31 July, each half of your last bill. It catches many people out in their second year.

How long do I need to keep my records?

Sole traders and landlords should keep records for at least five years after the 31 January deadline for that tax year. Limited companies usually need to keep them for six years from the end of the financial year.

Limited companies

Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?

It depends on your profit, how much you take out and your plans. The tax saving from a company has narrowed since dividend tax went up in April 2026, so it is worth running your own numbers. We can do that with you on your free call.

What does a limited company have to file each year?

Annual accounts to Companies House, a Corporation Tax return to HMRC, and a confirmation statement. Corporation Tax is usually due nine months and a day after your year end. Directors often need their own Self Assessment return too.

Making Tax Digital

Does Making Tax Digital apply to me?

If you are a sole trader or landlord with gross income from self-employment and property over £50,000, it has applied since 6 April 2026. Over £30,000, it starts on 6 April 2027, and over £20,000 on 6 April 2028.

Can you send my Making Tax Digital updates for me?

Yes. We can sign you up, set up your software, keep or check your records and send each quarterly update and your final return for you.
